Everyone needs to have friends. They make us laugh and help us during difficult times. For this reason, friendship is a theme that lots of books try to explore.

Here’s a list of our top five books about friendship:
Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone, by J. K. Rowling (1997)
The Harry Potter books are famous for so many reasons: they have action, adventure, humor and mystery. But behind all the magic and monsters, it’s the friendship between the three main characters – Harry, Ron and Hermione – that really makes the story special. And it’s in the first book that we see how these three very different characters become friends.

The Secret Garden, by Frances Hodgson Burnett (1911)
Mary Lennox is a selfish and unloved ten-year-old girl who lives at her uncle’s large house in the English countryside. At first, she’s unhappy about her life, but she gradually becomes friends with people around the house and starts to enjoy herself more. Eventually, Mary starts to uncover the various secrets of the house. This is a great story for kids who like mysteries.

The BFG, by Roald Dahl (1982)
Roald Dahl wrote many children’s books, and his dark sense of humor has ensured that his stories are as funny and surprising today as when they were written. In this story, we follow a young girl named Sophie who meets and befriends the BFG – which is short for the Big Friendly Giant. Unlike other giants (who like to eat children) the BFG is gentle and kind. Together, they devise a plan to save England from the giants!

Charlotte’s Web, by E. B. White (1952)
Wilbur is a little pig who lives a lonely life on a farm. The other animals ignore him, and he’s scared that he’s going to be slaughtered for meat. But Wilbur becomes friends with Charlotte, a kind-hearted spider who makes a plan to save Wilbur’s life. She writes praising messages about Wilbur in her web, which convinces the farmer to keep him alive. This story about friendship is bittersweet, but it’s definitely one that all kids should read.

The Hobbit, by J. R. R. Tolkien (1937)《
We often make new friends through shared experiences. The Hobbit tells the story of Bilbo Baggins, who teams up with a group of thirteen dwarves to find some treasure hidden in a mountain. The group faces dangers along the way, but their friendship helps them pull together and survive.
